Turnaround Times Explained

By Prime Excellence Grading  |  Updated September 15 2026

How long does card grading take in 2026? Depending on the grading company and service level, the answer can range from a few weeks to several months. That difference matters when you are grading a rookie during the season, preparing inventory for a card show or simply waiting to enjoy an important card again.

Prime Excellence Grading currently averages approximately three weeks from intake through grading and encapsulation. Shipping time to and from PXG is separate, and unusual cards or submission issues may require additional time. We would rather give collectors a realistic average than advertise a deadline that ignores the full process.

This guide explains what card grading turnaround time actually includes, why estimates vary and what collectors can do to prevent avoidable delays.

The Short Answer

Most mail-in card grading services measure their work in business days, and many do not start that clock when the carrier delivers the box. The posted estimate may begin only after the package is opened, entered into the system and accepted for processing. Return shipping comes after the grading clock ends.

A quoted 20-day turnaround can therefore take longer than four calendar weeks from your trip to the post office until the cards return. Weekends, holidays, intake backlogs and return transit all add time. When comparing card grading companies, ask what event starts the clock and whether the estimate refers to business days or calendar days.

What Turnaround Time Usually Includes

Professional card grading involves more than assigning a number. A submission must move through several stages before it can be returned safely.

  • Receiving and logging the package
  • Confirming the submission and identifying each card
  • Inspecting centering corners edges and surface
  • Assigning and reviewing the final grade
  • Creating the label and encapsulating the card
  • Completing final quality checks and preparing return shipping

PXG uses AI-assisted analysis for objective measurements and potential defect detection, followed by experienced human grading for judgment and context. Cards are inspected under 15 to 20 times magnification, assigned one overall whole-number grade, encapsulated and checked before shipment. Our average three-week turnaround covers that in-house process from intake through encapsulation.

Why Card Grading Can Take Months

The largest reason is submission volume. A grading company can receive far more packages than it can open and process immediately. When that happens, collectors may wait before the published grading clock even begins.

Service tiers create another delay. Higher-priced orders are usually processed before lower-cost or bulk submissions. Two collectors can mail cards to the same company on the same day and receive them months apart because they selected different service levels.

Card type can matter too. Oversized cards, thick memorabilia cards, unusual issues, autographs and cards requiring extra research may not move through the same workflow as a standard modern card. An inaccurate submission form or cards packed out of order can also slow intake. If you are still deciding what to submit, our guide to sports and Pokemon cards worth grading can help you narrow the field before packing an order.

Card Grading Turnaround Times in 2026

Turnaround conditions changed sharply during 2026. As of September 15, PSA’s Value and Value Bulk levels remained paused. Its newly opened Standard level was listed at $59.99 per card with an estimated 90 to 100 business-day turnaround. PSA also reported an active grading backlog of 9.9 million items on September 8.

TAG’s website stated that regular tiers were paused and only limited Priority grading was available. Beckett temporarily stopped accepting new online submissions while its digital platforms were undergoing maintenance, although existing orders continued to be processed. These are operational facts, not criticisms. They show why collectors should verify availability and timing immediately before submitting.

PXG remains open for submissions and currently averages approximately three weeks. Pricing ranges from $19 per card for five cards to $15 per card for a 100-card submission. For collectors who want affordable card grading without committing their cards to a wait measured in months, that combination deserves a serious look.

Why the Cheapest Advertised Tier May Cost More

A low advertised price can carry a long turnaround, a membership requirement, a minimum quantity or a low declared-value limit. Faster tiers can shorten the wait, but the price per card may rise quickly. That can erase much of the financial reason for grading a lower-value card.

The useful comparison is how much card grading costs in 2026 against the total waiting time. Include grading fees, memberships, shipping, insurance and any required submission supplies. PXG keeps the structure simple: $19 per card for five cards, $18 for ten, $16 for 25 and $15 for 100. There is no need to buy an expensive speed tier to receive PXG’s average three-week service.

How to Prevent Avoidable Delays

Collectors cannot control a grading company’s workload, but they can make their own package easier to receive and process.

  • Confirm that every card type is eligible before submitting
  • Complete the submission information accurately
  • Place each card in a penny sleeve and semi-rigid holder
  • Keep the cards in the same order as the paperwork
  • Use a sturdy box or mailer with cushioning that prevents movement
  • Ship with tracking and purchase the insurance you consider appropriate

Do not tape directly across holders or build packaging that is difficult to open without placing pressure on the cards. A clean, organized submission protects the cards and reduces the chance that intake staff must stop to resolve a problem. Before mailing an order, it is also worth reviewing these costly card grading mistakes to avoid so a preventable issue does not cost you time or money.

Fast Grading Still Has to Be Careful

Speed only matters if the finished grade remains careful and consistent. PXG does not reach its turnaround by skipping the condition categories collectors expect. Centering is measured, corners and edges are inspected closely, and the front and back surfaces are examined for scratches, print lines, dents, stains and other defects. Collectors who want a closer look can read what makes a trading card earn a Gem Mint 10 under the PXG grading process.

AI helps provide objective information, while the human grader evaluates the card as a complete collectible. That balance is important because measurements add consistency, but context still matters. The result is one clear overall grade without added subgrades that would increase cost and complicate the label.

Turnaround Is Only Part of the Decision

Collectors often begin with familiar names such as PSA, Beckett BGS, TAG and SGC. Before choosing, compare the time your cards may be unavailable with the total price, grading method, customer service and finished presentation. A short estimate is not useful if the service is closed, the affordable tier is paused or the actual clock starts weeks after delivery.

PXG offers an alternative built for collectors who value reasonable cost, a practical turnaround and a slab that displays well. We are veteran owned and independently operated. Our slabs are made in America in Denver, Colorado, and the labels are designed to give sports cards, Pokemon cards and other collectibles a polished presentation.

Card Grading Turnaround Questions

How long does card grading usually take

Card grading can take a few weeks or several months depending on the company, service tier, submission volume and intake backlog. PXG currently averages approximately three weeks from intake through encapsulation.

Does turnaround time include shipping

Usually not. Time spent shipping to the grading company and returning to the collector is generally separate from the grading estimate.

Do business days include weekends

No. Business-day estimates normally exclude weekends and holidays. A 20-business-day estimate is approximately four workweeks before other delays or shipping are added.

Why has my grading order not been entered yet

A delivered package may remain in the receiving queue before it is opened and logged. Some grading companies start their turnaround clock only after intake is complete.

Can a card grading turnaround be guaranteed

Most published turnaround times are estimates rather than guarantees. Submission volume, card research, operational interruptions and other issues can change the completion date.
